Belmont was its own village until 1998, when it was amalgamated with the Township of Yarmouth and the Village of Port Stanley to form the Municipality of Central Elgin. The new municipality's crest still nods to it: the ears of corn stand for the farming roots of Yarmouth and Belmont. The Belmont Historical Society keeps the older story alive.
The road through town has its own history. Belmont Road was King's Highway 74 from 1937, running north from Highway 3 at New Sarum through Mapleton and Belmont to the edge of London, with an interchange at Highway 401. The province handed it to Elgin and Middlesex counties in 1997, and it is now Elgin County Road 74.
Almost all detached. In the 2021 Census the Belmont population centre had 1,275 residents, up 11.8% from 1,140 in 2016, and about 87% of its occupied dwellings were single-detached houses, with most of the rest in low-rise apartment buildings. Roughly 83% of households owned their home and about one dwelling in ten was a condominium.
The building dates show a village that grew in waves: about a quarter of homes were built in 1960 or earlier, about half between 1961 and 1990, and close to one in five between 2011 and 2021. If you want a detached house with a yard in a village setting, look at what is for sale in Belmont right now and compare it with Dorchester, over in Thames Centre.
Belmont Arena at 14020 Belmont Road has a single ice pad, dressing rooms and an auditorium for rentals, and the Belmont Library, an Elgin County Library branch, is also on the main road at 14134 Belmont Road. Don Yeck Park has a splash pad, and Union Street Park has tennis and pickleball courts plus outdoor fitness equipment.
In the middle of the village, Confederation Park is a small green space owned by the Kettle Creek Conservation Authority and managed by Central Elgin, with seating for a picnic or a quiet sit.
The Thames Valley District School Board's South Dorchester Public School carries a Belmont mailing address at 48614 Crossley-Hunter Line, and New Sarum Public School sits farther south at 9473 Belmont Road. Catholic elementary and secondary schools are run by the London District Catholic School Board. Before counting on a school or a bus, run the Belmont address through each board's locator.
As the crow flies, downtown London (the Forks) is about 18 km from the village centre, St. Thomas about 15 km and Aylmer about 15 km. County Road 74 runs north across the Middlesex line to the Highway 401 interchange at Exit 195, which is what makes Belmont work for commuters heading east or west on the 401.
Central Elgin operates the Belmont water system; if a rural property outside the village relies on a well, the Municipality recommends testing it at least three times a year. Near creeks and wetlands, check the conservation authority's regulation mapping for the Kettle Creek or Catfish Creek watershed, depending on where the lot drains, before you firm up an offer. If you plan an addition or second unit, confirm the zoning with Central Elgin first.
