All three, in that order. The townsite was surveyed in 1854, became a village in 1874 and a town in 1879, and for a while three railways met here: the Wellington, Grey and Bruce (1872), the London, Huron and Bruce (1875) and a Canadian Pacific spur (1887). The last line was abandoned in 1991. In 1926 W.T. "Doc" Cruickshank founded CKNX, making Wingham one of the first Ontario towns with a community radio station; Cruickshank Park at 360 Josephine Street honours him.
Alice Munro was born in Wingham and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013. The town marks it with the Alice Munro Literary Garden at 273 Josephine Street, a self-guided walk beside the North Huron Museum, and the library is the Alice Munro Branch at 281 Edward Street. In 2001 Wingham joined the Village of Blyth and East Wawanosh Township to form the Township of North Huron.
Wingham is an older town with very little recent building. In the 2021 Census about 51% of Wingham's occupied homes dated from 1960 or before, with 28% more from 1961 to 1980; only 10 dwellings were counted as finished between 2016 and 2021. About 69% are single-detached houses, roughly 70% of households own, and condominiums are rare. The population edged up from 2,934 in 2016 to 2,981 in 2021, with a median age of 44.0.
The river forms the town's northern edge, and the township has turned the flats into parkland. The Wingham Community Trail is a 2.5 km loop along the old rail bed that crosses the Maitland and Josephine Street and circles the Turnberry Flood Plain Conservation Area, with benches and a covered gazebo. The River Flats Ecological Park gathers a boat launch, the Mary Lloyd Trail, Riverside Park, the Hannah Bridge, the cenotaph and a garden with a splash pad.
For a longer outing, Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area at 38854 Nature Centre Road, between Belgrave and Blyth, has a 3 km loop through meadow and hemlock forest along Belgrave Creek and the Maitland. In winter the township's community complex is the town's arena.
The Avon Maitland District School Board runs Maitland River Elementary School (JK to Grade 6) at 250 John Street East and F.E. Madill Secondary School (Grades 7 to 12) at 231 Madill Drive. The Huron-Perth Catholic board runs Sacred Heart Catholic School at 225 Cornyn Street, with its St. Anne's Catholic Secondary in Clinton. Check a Wingham address in the Huron Perth Student Transportation Services locator before relying on a school.
Wingham and District Hospital at 270 Carling Terrace has shared a single management team with the Listowel hospital since the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance formed on July 1, 2003. Josephine Street, the main street, is Huron County Road 4, the old Highway 4 route south to Clinton. Listowel, the alliance's other hospital town, sits on the Perth County side.
Two local questions are worth settling before conditions come off.
