The settlement began in 1852 as Mapleton and took the name Listowel in June 1856, when its post office opened, after the market town of Listowel in County Kerry, Ireland. It became a village in 1867 and a town in 1875, and in 1998 it joined the surrounding townships in the new Municipality of North Perth, whose office is at 330 Wallace Avenue North.
The town carries one hard memory. On February 28, 1959, the roof and walls of the Listowel Memorial Arena collapsed during a peewee hockey game, killing seven boys and one adult and injuring thirteen boys. The municipality has turned the former arena site into Memorial Arena Park '59, with memorial boards and bronze skates.
Because a lot of it is. In the 2021 Census about 40% of the 3,910 occupied dwellings in the Listowel population centre had been built since 2001, and 765 of them, roughly one in five, were finished between 2016 and 2021. Only about a quarter date from 1960 or earlier. The wider Municipality of North Perth grew 18.3% in those five years, from 13,130 to 15,538 people.
The mix leans detached but not overwhelmingly: about 61% single-detached houses, 23% apartments in low-rise buildings, and around 6% each semis and row houses. Two in three households owned their home, just under 6% were in a condominium, and the median age was 39.2. To see current asking prices, look at what is for sale in Listowel now.
Listowel Memorial Park at 455 Royal Street East is the centre of it: an amphitheatre overlooking the naturalized Maitland River, ball diamonds, the Listowel Kinsmen Pool and the Kinette Splash Pad. From there the Rotary Walkway makes a complete loop around the river, paved in concrete with a few stone dust sections and lit at night, and the wider North Perth Trail System runs about 22 km through town, farmland and forest.
Kin Park at 655 Louise Avenue North adds more diamonds, a pavilion and a soccer field, and the Steve Kerr Memorial Complex at 965 Binning Street West has the arena, a community hall and a two-lane indoor track.
Public schools belong to the Avon Maitland District School Board: Listowel Eastdale Public School (JK to Grade 6) at 365 Nichol Avenue South, North Perth Westfield Elementary School (JK to Grade 6) at 955 Binning Street West, and Listowel District Secondary School (Grades 7 to 12) at 155 Maitland Avenue South. St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School, at 1209 Tremaine Avenue South, belongs to the Huron-Perth Catholic board. Attendance areas shift as the town grows, so check each board's finder for a specific address.
Listowel Memorial Hospital at 255 Elizabeth Street East is one half of the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance. PC Connect buses serve Listowel; check PC Connect for current routes and times. By road, Highway 23 reaches the west edge of town at former Highway 86 and runs south to Mitchell; Milverton is about 19 km south as the crow flies, and downtown London about 87 km.
New-build and resale questions both come up here. On a house finished in the last few years, ask whether the Tarion new home warranty still has time left and get the builder's paperwork. Near the Maitland River, ask the Municipality which conservation authority regulates the lot, because Ontario Regulation 41/24 can require a permit for work in a river valley or floodplain. On rural North Perth properties, plan for a well and septic review. If you are selling to move up or down, start with an evaluation of your home.

Both, in a sense. Listowel was incorporated as a town in 1875, and since 1998 it has anchored the Municipality of North Perth, which also includes Atwood and Monkton.
Yes. Listowel Memorial Hospital on Elizabeth Street East is part of the Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance, which lists emergency care at both Listowel and Wingham.

Downtown London is about 87 km away and downtown Stratford about 40 km, both as the crow flies, so a daily London commute is a long one.
