Bayfield has a Dutch founder and a British namesake. In 1832 Carel Lodewijk, Baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken, bought 388 acres from the Canada Company at the river mouth, and a village plan, a grist mill and a lumber mill followed over the next decade. The name honours Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield, the naval officer who surveyed the Great Lakes and chose the site. Bayfield was an incorporated village by 1876, and on January 1, 2001 it joined Hensall, Zurich, Stanley and Hay in the new Municipality of Bluewater.
The old core has been protected longer than most in Ontario. The municipality describes the Bayfield Heritage Conservation District, established in 1982, as one of the first in the province; it originally took in 28 buildings along Main Street, Clan Gregor Square and Elgin Place.
Bayfield is a village of owners and part-time residents. The 2021 Census counted 906 private dwellings but only 630 occupied by usual residents, so roughly three in ten homes were cottages, seasonal places or otherwise not anyone's main address on census day. Among occupied homes about 85% were single-detached houses and 84% were owner-occupied, and the median age of residents was 60.8.
It is also newer than the heritage streetscape suggests: 32% of occupied homes were built in 2001 or later, and only one in five dates from 1960 or earlier. Browse houses and cottages for sale in Bayfield, or widen the search to Lake Huron waterfront homes from Plympton-Wyoming to Goderich.
Bluewater runs the Village of Bayfield Marina at the river mouth, with transient docks on the south shore; the boat launch at the end of Fishermans Wharf Road is managed by the Bayfield River Harbour Authority. Pier Beach, beside the marina, is the main beach, with a lifesaving station and washrooms. Howard Street Beach is stairs-only with no washrooms, and Pavilion Road Beach south of the village adds a pavilion and a walking trail.
Neither school board lists a school in the village itself. Avon Maitland's directory includes Huron Centennial Public School (JK to Grade 8) near Brucefield, with secondary schools in Clinton and Goderich; the Huron-Perth Catholic board runs St. Boniface in Zurich and St. Anne's Catholic Secondary in Clinton. Confirm the school for any address with the Huron Perth Student Transportation Services locator.
The library branch is at 18 Bayfield Main Street North, beside the Bayfield Historical Society archives. The village is on municipal wastewater, and Highway 21, the Bluewater Highway, runs north to Goderich, about 20 km away. The closest hospitals are in Goderich and Clinton.
Here the checks are about the bluffs and the heritage rules, and we walk through each with buyers before an offer goes firm.

No. Bayfield has been part of the Municipality of Bluewater since January 1, 2001, together with Hensall, Zurich, Brucefield, Dashwood and Varna.
The 2021 Census counted 1,250 residents in the Bayfield designated place, living in 630 occupied dwellings out of 906 in total.
Yes. Homes inside the district change hands like any other, but exterior alterations can need a heritage permit. Ask us to confirm whether a listing sits inside the district boundary.
Goderich to the north is a full-service town with a hospital, and Grand Bend and the rest of the Lake Huron cottage shore are worth a look too.
