Parks Canada's register describes Wolseley Barracks, on Oxford Street East, as the first purpose-built infantry training school constructed by the Dominion Government. It went up between 1886 and 1888 and was designated a national historic site in 1963. The City's heritage register also designates the 1907 Military Stores building at 652 Elizabeth Street and lists former military quarters on Paardeberg Crescent and Oxford Street East.
The City's NeighbourGood London site says the neighbourhood takes its name from Thomas Carling of brewery fame, who farmed the land and later sold it in smaller parcels, including a large section to the military. The street names carry the history: the London Heritage Council's notes tie Paardeberg Crescent to the 1900 Battle of Paardeberg in the South African War, and Wolseley Avenue to Viscount Wolseley, honorary colonel of The Royal Canadian Regiment from 1899 until 1913. Ortona Road, Falaise Road, Rhine Avenue and Flanders Row are a few blocks away.
The Heritage Council's note on Bellwood Crescent calls the Bellwood Park subdivision a post-war nursery where baby carriages outnumbered cars, with street after street of new low-rental homes going up in 1947. NeighbourGood describes Carling Heights as a mix of late 1800s farmhouses, post-war single and semi-detached homes, row housing and large apartment buildings, and Kipps Lane as mostly 1950s detached homes with later houses, townhomes and apartments.
The 2016 Census numbers match that variety. Of 9,150 occupied homes, 36% were single-detached, 35% in buildings of five or more storeys, 11% row houses, 10% low-rise apartments, 4% duplexes and 3% semi-detached. Only 39% were owner-occupied, and the median age was 33.3. Older landmarks on the heritage register include the Orange Hall of about 1890 at 866 Adelaide Street North and a designated house of about 1882 at 670 Oxford Street East.
The Thames Valley District School Board runs East Carling (814 Quebec Street), Knollwood Park (70 Gammage Street) and Northbrae (335 Belfield Street) public schools, plus Louise Arbour French Immersion Public School next door at 365 Belfield Street. The London District Catholic School Board runs Blessed Sacrament Catholic School at 1063 Oxford Street East. Use each board's locator to confirm the school for a specific address.
The Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre at 656 Elizabeth Street has gymnasiums, a 25-metre, six-lane pool, a climbing wall and a fitness centre. Carling Arena at 675 Grosvenor Street opened in 1963, was renovated in 1990 and has two ice surfaces. Ed Blake Park at 449 Barker Street has a spray pad, and McMahen Park on Adelaide Street North is a neighbourhood park.
NeighbourGood names two main commercial strips: Oxford Street at Gammage Street, and Adelaide Street from Cheapside to Huron. London Transit buses run along Adelaide Street North, Oxford Street East and Kipps Lane; check LTC for routes and times. From the middle of the district, Fanshawe College's main campus is about 2.2 km away in Huron Heights, and Stoneybrook lies across the river.
If you plan to rent out a house or duplex, check the City's current rules first. Several properties are on the City's heritage register, so check whether a house is one of them before planning exterior changes or demolition. For an apartment or townhouse condominium, read the status certificate. For the numbers side, see what to weigh on an investment property.

Not quite. Carling Heights is the neighbourhood around Wolseley Barracks. The Carling planning district also takes in Kipps Lane, Bellwood Park and the streets up to the North Thames.
It has a large rental market: 61% of homes were rented in the 2016 Census. Whether a particular house works depends on zoning and the numbers, so look at what to weigh on an investment property first.
Yes. The UTRCA notes that the paved parkway follows the south side of the North Thames between Adelaide Street and Highbury Avenue, which is Carling's northern edge.
Yes. The Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre on Elizabeth Street has a 25-metre, six-lane indoor pool.
