The village grew up around the corner of Ilderton Road and Hyde Park Road, where a store, a shoemaker, a wagon-maker and a blacksmith had opened by the 1850s. The name comes from Ilderton in Northumberland, England, home of many of the pioneer families. The London, Huron and Bruce Railway opened through the village in late 1875, which gave Ilderton its village status in 1876; the station closed in 1967 and the last train ran in 1989.
Older still is the Ilderton Fall Fair, run by the Ilderton Agricultural Society since 1851, which fills the fairgrounds at 195 King Street each fall.
Statistics Canada's Ilderton population centre had 2,250 residents in 2021, up 13.4% from 1,985 in 2016, in 785 occupied homes. Of those, 655 were single-detached houses, 70 were semi-detached and 55 were apartments in low-rise buildings; about nine in ten households owned. Roughly 440 of the village's homes were built between 1991 and 2010, so the typical Ilderton resale is a detached house from that era rather than a century home.
If that is the house you have in mind, here are the houses for sale in Ilderton today.
Yes, for most homes. Middlesex Centre's Servicing Master Plan says Ilderton provides sanitary servicing for most residents through a sewer network, four pumping stations and the Ilderton Wastewater Treatment Facility. Water comes straight off the Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System transmission main into the Ilderton reservoir.
The Thames Valley District School Board's Oxbow Public School, a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school at 13624 Ilderton Road, describes itself as located just east of Ilderton. The London District Catholic School Board also serves the area, but none of its schools outside London is in Ilderton itself. Use each board's school locator to confirm the assigned schools for a specific address, since boundaries change.
Ilderton Road is the recreation strip. The Ilderton Arena (13168 Ilderton Road) has an ice pad of about 80 by 180 feet, seating for 500 and a four-sheet curling club, and the Ilderton Community Centre beside it hosts events of up to 300. Ilderton Heritage Park on Hyde Park Road has three ball diamonds, a splash pad and a skateboard park. The Ilderton Rail Trail starts at Junction Park on Ilderton Road and runs about 3.4 km in total, north to Twelve Mile Road. The Middlesex County Library's Ilderton branch is at 40 Heritage Drive.
Middlesex Centre's municipal office carries an Ilderton mailing address (10227 Ilderton Road) but sits in Coldstream, next to the Coldstream Community Centre, not in the village.
Ilderton sits northwest of the city on Hyde Park Road and Ilderton Road, about 15 km as the crow flies from the Forks of the Thames and roughly 7 km from Arva. Middlesex County Connect buses serve Ilderton; check the County's schedule. Inside the city, Hyde Park is the closest comparison for buyers weighing village and suburb.
Ilderton sits across two conservation authority watersheds: the municipality's servicing plan places part of the settlement with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority and part with the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority. If the lot backs onto a creek, drain or woodlot, check the right authority's regulated area map before you firm up an offer. On the rural edges outside the serviced area, confirm whether the home is on a well and septic, and book a proper inspection.
