The township's own history starts with Irish settlers fleeing the potato famine, the Donnelly family among them, who with a large English contingent founded a community called Marystown. Lucan is also the site of the earlier Wilberforce settlement, which the township says is commonly known to have been part of the Underground Railroad; around 1829 roughly 200 Black Americans were granted land there by the Canada Company. When Marystown turned out to duplicate another place name, the village became Lucan, after Lord Lucan, an Irish landowner.
On January 1, 1999, the Village of Lucan and Biddulph Township amalgamated as the Township of Lucan Biddulph, which also takes in the village of Granton. When we look at what is for sale in Lucan, we take in the whole township, Granton included.
Early on February 4, 1880, an armed party killed James Donnelly, a farmer living near Lucan, his wife Johannah, their sons Thomas and John, and his niece Bridget. The accused were tried twice: the first jury, in September 1880, disagreed, and a second jury in January 1881 returned a directed verdict of not guilty, so no one was ever convicted. The Lucan Area Heritage and Donnelly Museum at 171 Main Street tells that story alongside the history of Wilberforce and the area's Irish and later Dutch settlers.
Statistics Canada's Lucan population centre grew from 2,541 people in 2016 to 3,089 in 2021, up 21.6%, and the township as a whole rose 20.9% to 5,680. The village had 1,185 occupied homes: 945 single-detached, 110 apartments in low-rise buildings, 55 semis, and smaller numbers of row houses and duplex units. About 83% of households owned.
The age mix is wide. About 220 homes date from 1960 or earlier, while roughly 355 were built between 2011 and 2021, so buyers choose between established village lots and newer subdivision homes. You will usually find both among the houses for sale in Lucan today.
