Because of Andrew West, a shoemaker from New York State who settled in 1848 on a farm at what is now the corner of William and Church Streets and opened a hotel a year later. A blacksmith and other businesses followed, and the crossroads became West's Corner. In 1871 a Presbyterian minister, Rev. P. Musgrove, suggested renaming it after Milverton in England, and the village held its first council meeting in January 1881.
The Township's history reads like a checklist of small-town firsts: a post office from 1854 (the present building went up in 1917), a grist mill in 1871, a Carnegie library in 1909, hydro power in 1916, a municipal water system in 1919 and sewers in 1967. On January 1, 1998 the village joined Ellice, Mornington, North Easthope and South Easthope townships to form Perth East, and the township office sits at 25 Mill Street East.
Detached houses make up about 72% of the 685 occupied dwellings in the Milverton population centre, according to the 2021 Census, with low-rise apartments at about 17% and row houses at about 7%. Roughly three in four households owned their home and condominiums were rare, about 2%. The village is older at its core, with about 35% of homes built in 1960 or earlier, but it has been adding houses: 85 homes, about one in eight, were finished between 2016 and 2021, and the population rose 13.3% to 1,797. The median age was 38.4. To see what is on the market, look at what is for sale in Milverton now.
Most of it happens around the Perth East Recreation Complex (the PERC) at 40 Temperance Street. It holds an arena, a banquet hall for up to 400 people and an outdoor pool, a 25 m by 12 m pool opened in 1995 with two diving boards and a slide. An All Wheels Park sits beside it, and Arand Field, the ball diamond at 17 Pierson Street, sits next to the complex and the Milverton Agricultural Society hall.
The agricultural society traces back to the Mornington Agricultural Society of 1865, and the Milverton fair is usually held on the fourth weekend in September. The Lions Club, chartered in 1940, built the picnic shelter in Greenwood Park.
The Avon Maitland District School Board runs Milverton Public School (JK to Grade 8) at 68 Mill Street East. For secondary school and for Catholic schools, confirm the assigned school for an address with the Avon Maitland and Huron-Perth Catholic boards, since boundaries and busing change.
The Township places Milverton 27 km north of Stratford and 27 km south of Listowel. As the crow flies, it is about 22 km from downtown Stratford, about 19 km from Listowel and about 70 km from downtown London. The closest hospitals are Listowel Memorial and Stratford General.
Inside the village, homes are on municipal water and sewer. Outside the serviced area, a country property usually means a private well and septic system: ask for the well record (Ontario keeps a public well records map), book a water test, and get the septic permit history. Ask the Township which conservation authority regulates a lot near a watercourse, since Ontario Regulation 41/24 can require a permit there. Our land transfer tax calculator covers the closing cost side.
