Exeter began as a pair of hamlets facing each other across the Ausable River. In 1833 there were two dwellings, James Willis's and William McConnell's tavern; Isaac Carling then brought settlers from Exeter and Devon in England, and by 1853 the place had passed 300 people. On July 1, 1873 Francistown, north of the river, and Exeter, to the south, merged into the Village of Exeter. In 2001 provincial restructuring joined Exeter with Stephen and Usborne townships as the Municipality of South Huron.
Three buildings are designated under the Ontario Heritage Act: the 1913 Town Hall at 322 Main Street South, still the municipal office; Carling House (1895) at 73 Huron Street West, with its wrap-around verandah; and the 1894 Hooper House at 296 William Street, in white brick with red accents.
The 2021 Census counted 2,140 occupied dwellings in the Exeter population centre, about 74% of them owner-occupied. Some 36% predate 1961 and 28% more went up from 1961 through 1980; only about 14% date from 2001 or later, and nothing in town reaches five storeys. The heritage register hints at the older streets, listing an 1855 house on John Street East and the 1880 Willis homestead on Simcoe Street. MacNaughton Park, on the east side of Main Street at the Ausable River dam, is the trailhead for the South Huron Trail, an 8 km all-season route down the river valley to Morrison Dam Conservation Area, about 2 km east of town, with shorter 2 km and 4 km loops. The dam went in during 1958 and 1959 to supply water to Exeter's former canning factory, and the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority runs its administration centre from the same property.
South Huron Hospital at 24 Huron Street West has an emergency department, inpatient beds and imaging. The library branch is at 330 Main Street South, and town water comes from Lake Huron through the Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System.
Highway 4 is the spine of the town: south through Huron Park and Lucan toward London, north through Hensall to its end at Highway 8 in Clinton. For the beach side of the region, look at Grand Bend.
