Sunningdale grew fast: the City's neighbourhood profile counted 505 residents in 1996 and 5,385 in 2016, when 2,120 homes were occupied. The City's NeighbourGood page describes mostly single-detached homes built after 2000, plus some townhouses and high-rise apartments.
The apartments change the picture. In 2016, 26% of occupied homes were in buildings of five or more storeys, alongside 60% single-detached houses and 14% row houses. The median age was 45.7 and 23% of residents were 65 or older, so this is a district where downsizers moving into a condo live near young families in new detached houses. Owners held 80% of homes.
Country estates and farms. The City's heritage register lists the Labatt Estate at 71 Fanshawe Park Road West, a 1937 Georgian Revival house called Hylands at 120 Chantry Place, and a Tudor Revival house from about 1935 at 1875 Richmond Street. A Georgian farmhouse from about 1850 at 2096 Wonderland Road North is formally designated.
The Sunningdale Golf and Country Club, a private club at 465 Sunningdale Road West, sits on the north side, largely inside the planning district; the club credits its course design to Stanley Thompson and Clinton (Robbie) Robinson. Nearby street names include Torrey Pines Way, Sawgrass Link and Callaway Road, north of Sunningdale Road, with Plane Tree Drive, Quarrier Road, Pinnacle Parkway and Valleyrun Boulevard to the south.
The London District Catholic School Board's St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School at 2140 Quarrier Road is inside the planning district. The City's NeighbourGood page also lists Masonville Public School (TVDSB), Saint André Bessette Catholic Secondary School (LDCSB) and A.B. Lucas Secondary School (TVDSB), all outside the district.
Confirm the school for a specific address with the TVDSB school locator and the LDCSB school finder; boundaries change as new streets fill in.
The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority names Sunningdale Road as one of the two main access points to the Medway Valley Heritage Forest ESA, and its trail map adds entrances at Valleyrun Boulevard and Creekridge Bend. The ESA has 12.2 km of managed trails, is open from 6 am to 10 pm, and dogs must stay on a leash.
Inside the neighbourhood, NeighbourGood describes Plane Tree Park as the centre, with play structures, swings, soccer fields and open space. Other parks include Pinnacle Park, Valley Run Park, Hickorystick Park, Villagewalk Commons, Torrey Pines Park and the Pebblecreek parks.
London Transit buses run through the neighbourhood and along Fanshawe Park Road West; check LTC for current routes and times. As the crow flies, St. Catherine of Siena is about 1.3 km from CF Masonville Place, the shopping and transit hub across Fanshawe Park Road in Masonville.
Three checks matter most here:
Neighbouring Uplands lies across Richmond Street to the east.
