Its first names did not stick. Surveyed in 1851 and known as Bosanquet Corners or Eastman Corners, the village was renamed Arkona in 1857 after the rugged cape on the Baltic island of Rugen, a choice credited to cabinetmaker Ephraim Brower and postmaster Levi Schooley. Arkona incorporated as a village in 1876 and stayed independent until it joined Lambton Shores in 2001. It sits beside the Ausable River on former Highway 79, between Thedford and Watford near the Lambton-Middlesex line, and fruit orchards remain part of the local economy.
Rock Glen Conservation Area, at 8680 Rock Glen Road just north of the village, is run by the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority. The Ausable has exposed fossil-bearing rock here from the Devonian period, more than 350 million years old, and common finds include brachiopods, horn corals and crinoid stems. The rule is one fossil per person, and digging is not allowed. About 50 steps lead down to the waterfall and more than 100 to the floor of the gorge, and wide gravel paths, bridges and boardwalks wind through Carolinian forest.
The Arkona Lions Museum and Information Centre on the site displays fossils, minerals and artifacts found locally. The conservation area is open seasonally, from spring into the fall, and ABCA posts each season's dates, with the trails open in daylight year-round when weather permits. Between 1907 and 1926 the Rock Glen Power Company ran a dam and generator at the site.
Older and mostly detached. The 2021 Census counted 648 residents, up 2.2 percent from 2016, in 275 occupied homes. About 84 percent are single-detached houses, most of the rest are units in small apartment buildings or duplexes, and three quarters of households own their home. Nearly half the housing (45 percent) was built in 1960 or earlier, and only about 13 percent since 2001, so expect established village lots rather than new subdivisions. There are no condominium units in the census count.
The Arkona Community Centre at 16 Smith Street was once the village's small elementary school; it now holds the Lambton County Library branch, a meeting room and a recreation room, with a spray pad, playground and basketball court outside. Arkona is served by the Lambton Kent District School Board (public) and the St. Clair Catholic District School Board, and neither school named on the Municipality's education list is in Arkona itself, so check each board's locator for bus routes and assigned schools.
Highway 402 is close: exit 44 at Nauvoo Road (County Road 79) is signed for Watford and Arkona. As the crow flies, Thedford is about 10 km north, Forest and Watford about 14 km each, and our London office about 47 km. Hospitals the Municipality lists for residents include Strathroy Middlesex General, Bluewater Health in Sarnia and the Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital in Petrolia.
The village has municipal water from Lake Huron through the Port Blake system and its own sewage treatment plant, so confirm the connections. Lots on the edge of the Ausable valley and gorge deserve a closer look: Ontario Regulation 41/24 covers river and stream valleys, including their slopes, so check the ABCA's online mapping before planning an addition, deck or pool. On a rural property outside the village, ask for the well record and septic permit; septic inspections in Lambton Shores go through the County of Lambton.

One per person, according to the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, and digging is prohibited.
Yes. The Municipality lists an Arkona treatment plant serving the village, and the village gets municipal water from the Lake Huron supply system.
Close. Nauvoo Road (County Road 79) runs south to Highway 402 at exit 44, which is signed for Watford and Arkona.
A few. The 2021 Census counted only about 35 homes built in the village since 2001, out of roughly 280.
Call Rob or George directly, or send a message and one of them will get back to you. A home evaluation is free and prepared by a person, never a formula.
