The name is literal. The Grand Trunk Railway was built through dense forest here, the station took its name from the landscape, and the post office opened as Forest in 1859. Hickory Creek, which runs through town, once supplied water for the steam locomotives. Forest grew into a town of its own and in 2001 joined the Township of Bosanquet and the villages of Arkona, Grand Bend and Thedford to form Lambton Shores.
The Forest Lambton Museum at 8 Main Street North keeps that history, with displays on the railway, the flax, basket and fruit industries, the People's Telephone and local fossils, and it doubles as a visitor centre for Lambton Shores.
More renters than the municipality as a whole. In the 2021 Census, the Forest population centre had 2,429 residents, up 6.7 percent from 2016, in 1,085 occupied homes. About 76 percent are single-detached houses and 18 percent are apartments in low-rise buildings, with some semis and row houses. Two thirds of households own and one third rent, compared with about one in five renting across Lambton Shores. Forest is an older town, too: 44 percent of homes were built in 1960 or earlier and another 29 percent between 1961 and 1980, while about 11 percent went up after 2000.
For buyers that means plenty of older detached homes on established streets, a stock of small apartment buildings, and relatively little new construction. If you are weighing an income property, start with the basics of buying an investment property.
King Street and Main Street hold the daily errands. The Kineto Theatre at 24 King Street West has shown films since 1917, which the Municipality calls one of the world's oldest movie theatres. The Forest branch of the Lambton County Library is at 61 King Street West, and the North Lambton Community Health Centre is also on King Street West.
The Shores Recreation Centre on Amtelecom Parkway opened in 2007 with an NHL-size arena, a gymnasium, a fitness centre, an indoor walking track and meeting space. On Main Street South, the Forest Amphitheatre at the Esli Dodge Conservation Area sets a stage into a natural hillside with room for more than 6,000 people, beside a man-made lake and walking trails.
Forest has three schools. The Lambton Kent District School Board runs North Lambton Secondary School on George Street and Kinnwood Central Public School on MacDonald Street, and the St. Clair Catholic District School Board runs St. John Fisher Catholic School on Main Street North. The Municipality's education page also lists St. Patrick's Catholic High School in Sarnia. Confirm the assigned school for any address with each board.
Highway 21 runs north from Highway 402 at exit 34, which is signed for Forest and Grand Bend. As the crow flies, Sarnia is about 36 km west, Thedford and Arkona about 14 km east, and our London office about 61 km. For hospital care, the Municipality points residents to Bluewater Health in Sarnia and to the Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital in Petrolia.
Forest is on municipal water from the Lambton Area Water Supply System and on sewers through the town's treatment plant and lagoon. Ask sellers about any basement water history, whether the home has a backwater valve, and where the sump pump drains; the Municipality says sump pumps should not discharge into the sanitary sewer. On a rural lot outside town, confirm the well and septic, and if a property backs onto a creek or ravine, check the conservation authority's regulated area mapping before you firm up an offer.
