The big recreation complex at 501 Southdale Road West opened in 2018 as the Bostwick Community Centre, a partnership of the City, the YMCA and the London Public Library, and in 2022 it was renamed the StarTech.com Community Centre, YMCA and Library under a 15-year naming sponsorship. The City lists a six-lane, 25-metre indoor pool, two NHL-sized ice pads, a gymnasium, a YMCA fitness centre, a 200-metre walking loop and an accessible playground. The library calls its branch there the Bostwick Library.
The district barely existed as a neighbourhood a generation ago. The City's profile counted 15 residents in 1996, 905 in 2011 and 1,660 in 2016. Of the 720 occupied homes in 2016, 51% were in apartment buildings of five or more storeys, 40% were single-detached and 9% were row houses, and 53% were rented. The median age was 44.3 and 27% of residents were 65 or older, so this is not only a young-family district.
On the map, the housing sits on streets such as Morgan Avenue, Morgan Crescent, Singleton Avenue, Pincombe Drive, Jinnies Way and Yorkville Street, with the taller buildings near Southdale Road West. Pincombe North, at 3555 Morgan Crescent, is a City park with a paved path and open green space.
Wonderland Road South runs through the middle of the district, and the Southwest Area Plan designates the corridor between Southdale Road West and Hamlyn Street as the Wonderland Road Community Enterprise Corridor, open to commercial, office, residential and institutional uses. That stretch holds a supermarket and big-box stores near Southdale and Bradley Avenue West.
London Transit buses serve Wharncliffe Road South and Southdale Road West, and Westmount Mall, about 1 km north of the community centre, is served by several more routes. Check LTC for routes and times.
Families here deal with the Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board. Nearby schools include Westmount Public School and Saunders Secondary School on Viscount Road, across Southdale Road in Westmount, and White Pine Public School on Regiment Road in the Talbot district. Always confirm the assigned school with each board's locator, since boundaries in a growing district can change.
With half the homes in apartment buildings, many resales are condominium units. Get the status certificate: Ontario's Condominium Authority says the corporation must provide it within 10 days for a fee of up to $100, and it shows the reserve fund, budget and any special assessments. Nearby, it's worth comparing Westmount and Talbot, or condos for sale across London.
