Dutton exists because of a railway. A history of early Dutton held by the Elgin County Archives says the village owed its birth to the Canada Southern Railway, built through in 1872. A small settlement sprang up where the line crossed Currie Road, named for John Currie, who settled on lot 12 of the 7th concession in 1819. The site was low and marshy, and neighbours in Wallacetown mocked it as Monkey Run.
At first the railway refused to build a station, so trains simply stopped at the crossing now known as Main Street. Naming the place caused a feud: the west side wanted Lisgar, after the Governor General, and the east side wanted Bennettville, after the surveyor George Bennett. Both lost, and the railway named it Dutton after its chief engineer. The post office adopted the name in 1874, and in the 1880s, when most buildings were still frame, W.H. Nelson put up three brick stores on the east side of Main Street.
Dutton grew between the 2016 and 2021 censuses: 1,658 people in 2021, up 14.0% from 1,454 in 2016. Of 670 occupied dwellings, 535 were single-detached houses (80%), 60 were apartments in duplexes and 50 were in low-rise apartment buildings; the census counted no condominiums. About 79% of households owned their home.
The age profile has two layers. Roughly 225 homes (34%) were built in 1960 or earlier, the railway village core, while about 200 (30%) went up between 2001 and 2021.
Sons of Scotland Park is the village's recreation hub: the Dutton Dunwich Community Centre, the outdoor community pool at 196 Queen Street, a splash pad, playground and sports fields. The Town Hall at 199 Currie Road was built by John Findlay as a memorial hall to local First World War veterans, and its upper floor is the theatre of the West Elgin Dramatics Society, founded in 1971. The Dutton Farmers Market runs seasonally, from spring into the fall.
The Thames Valley District School Board runs Dunwich-Dutton Public School, Kindergarten to Grade 8, at 239 Miller Road. West Elgin Secondary School is in nearby West Lorne, and the London District Catholic School Board lists St. Mary's in West Lorne among its Elgin County schools. Currie Road (County Road 8) meets Highway 401 at exit 149, and the Dutton and West Lorne service centres sit just west on the highway. Rodney is about 18 km to the southwest in a straight line.
Dutton Dunwich runs from the Thames River in the north to Lake Erie in the south. The municipality's Official Plan describes most of its shoreline as bluffs 15 to 45 metres high, which is why much of it remains undeveloped, with Duttona Beach as its seasonal cottage community. South of Wallacetown, John E. Pearce Provincial Park and the Backus-Page House Museum sit above the lake. If a cottage on that shore tempts you, read up on Lake Erie cottage country and its shoreline rules first.
