Rodney has had several names and at least two locations. It began as Stewart's Mills, after the owner of its first sawmill, and from 1840 to 1865 was called Centreville for its spot at Furnival Road and the 7th Concession, now Downie Line. In 1865 it took the name of British admiral George Brydges Rodney, and when the Canada Southern Railway came through in 1872 the centre of the village moved about three kilometres south to meet it.
Rodney was incorporated as a village in 1907 and later rejoined Aldborough Township, which amalgamated with West Lorne in January 1998 to create the Municipality of West Elgin. The municipal office is in Rodney, at 22413 Hoskins Line.
Mostly older detached houses. The 2021 Census counted 355 single-detached homes among 430 occupied dwellings (83%), plus about 65 units in low-rise apartment buildings. Of 420 dwellings with a known construction date, 240 (57%) were built in 1960 or earlier and another 90 between 1961 and 1980, so this is not a subdivision market. About three in four households owned their home.
West Elgin's Official Plan defines Rodney's Downtown Core as Furnival Road (County Road 103) between Albert Street and Main Street, including the east side of Jane Street, and names Rodney and West Lorne as its top-tier settlement areas, where most growth should go.
Yes. The Official Plan says Rodney and West Lorne are the settlements with full municipal water and sanitary sewage, and that Rodney's sewage treatment plant, with a lagoon back-up, sits in the southwest quadrant off Pioneer Line. West Elgin's water system has an elevated storage tank in Rodney, but the plan also notes that some parts of the municipality rely on well water. Outside the village, confirm whether a property has a well and septic system, and use Ontario's well record map and septic guidance.
Rodney also sits partly in the Thames River watershed and partly in the Lake Erie watershed, with local drains such as the Milton Drain and Wismer Drain. The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority regulates hazard lands here, so check its mapping for lots near a drain or watercourse.
The Thames Valley District School Board's Aldborough Public School, Kindergarten to Grade 8, is at 11443 Furnival Road. West Elgin Secondary School and the London District Catholic School Board's St. Mary's Catholic School are both in West Lorne. Confirm schools for a specific address with each board.
The West Elgin Community Pool is at 259 Ridout Street, beside Rodney Park with its playground and walking track. Joe's Bush, at 21597 Silver Clay Line, has walking and biking trails, the Rodney library branch is at 207 Furnival Road, and the Official Plan counts the fairgrounds and community centre among Rodney's main recreation spaces.
Furnival Road meets Highway 401 at exit 129, signed for Wardsville and Rodney. South of the village, at Port Glasgow, West Elgin keeps a public beach and a marina at 8536 Haven's Lake Road, plus a seasonal trailer park. West Elgin's Lake Erie shoreline is mostly bluffs prone to erosion, which is worth understanding before you look at a cottage on that shore. Many Rodney buyers also look at Dutton and Glencoe.
Something else? Ask Rob or George directly.
No. It is a village within the Municipality of West Elgin in Elgin County, which also includes West Lorne, New Glasgow, Eagle and Port Glasgow.
Few. The 2021 Census shows most of Rodney's homes were built before 1981. That makes a thorough home inspection especially worthwhile.
Yes. Port Glasgow Beach on Lake Erie, south of the village, is a municipal beach run by West Elgin.
The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority. Check its mapping before you plan work on a lot near a drain or watercourse.
