The railway put Glencoe on the map. The first station was built in 1854 as a Great Western Railway stop, and the present Queen Anne Revival station at 151 McRae Street dates from 1904; it was inducted into the North America Railway Hall of Fame in 2010. On January 1, 2001 the villages of Glencoe and Wardsville joined the townships of Ekfrid and Mosa to form the Municipality of Southwest Middlesex, which runs from its office at 153 McKellar Street in Glencoe.
The municipality describes itself as sitting halfway between London and Chatham, with the Thames River along its southern boundary and about 5,900 residents across a large farming area. Glencoe and Wardsville are its two urban centres, and the municipal office is in Glencoe.
Glencoe's housing is mostly detached and mostly mid-century or older. The 2021 Census counted 956 occupied private dwellings in the Glencoe population centre: 73.8% single-detached, 14.7% apartments in low-rise buildings, 5.2% semi-detached and 4.2% row houses. A third of homes (33.3%) were built in 1960 or earlier and another 32.3% between 1961 and 1980, so roughly two in three predate 1981, while only about one in nine went up after 2000.
Roughly 70% of households owned their home, a lower share than in Mount Brydges, and condominiums barely register (about 15 households). The population was steady, 2,126 in 2016 and 2,158 in 2021, with a median age of 44.
The Thames Valley District School Board runs Glencoe District High School at 3581 Concession Drive, plus two rural elementary schools with Glencoe addresses: Ekcoe Central Public School on Parkhouse Drive and Mosa Central Public School on Pratt Siding Road. The London District Catholic School Board runs St. Charles at 257 Elizabeth Street. Boundaries change, so check each board's locator for the address you are considering.
The municipal pool and splash pad at 138 North Street has a heated six-lane, 25-metre pool. The fairgrounds at 138 Mill Street hold the Project 2000 Grounds, two ball diamonds and soccer fields. Simpson Street Park, tennis courts on Concession Drive, the Commonwealth Dog Park at Industrial Road and Tower Avenue, and Strathburn Park on Longwoods Road round it out, and the Glencoe branch of Middlesex County Library is at 123 McKellar Street.
Rail is the standout. VIA Rail serves the unstaffed Glencoe station on its Toronto to Windsor corridor, and most other trips are by car; Strathroy is about 24 km north-northeast in a straight line. For hospital care, the Middlesex Hospital Alliance runs Four Counties Health Services in Newbury, the small independent village that Southwest Middlesex surrounds, as well as Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital.
Start with services. Southwest Middlesex supplies drinking water drawn from Lake Erie through the West Elgin distribution system to Glencoe, Wardsville, Appin, Melbourne and rural areas, but municipal wastewater treatment is provided only to the urban areas of Glencoe and Wardsville, so for a rural property confirm how sewage is handled. With most of the village's houses built before 1981, a careful home inspection is worth the time. We can line one up and pull what is for sale in Glencoe right now for you.

Yes. Glencoe station at 151 McRae Street is an unstaffed VIA Rail stop. Check VIA's schedule for current departures.
The Municipality of Southwest Middlesex in Middlesex County, formed in 2001 from the villages of Glencoe and Wardsville and the townships of Ekfrid and Mosa.
The 2021 Census counted 2,158 people in the Glencoe population centre and 5,893 in all of Southwest Middlesex.
The village is on the municipal water system, which draws from Lake Erie, and on municipal wastewater treatment. Outside Glencoe and Wardsville there is no municipal wastewater treatment, so on a country listing ask how sewage is handled and whether the property is on the water line or a well.
