At the centre of the district sits Highland Country Club, which has been a member-owned private club since 1922; its course is a traditional Stanley Thompson design from that year. Street names such as Country Club Drive, Golfview Road, Golfdale Crescent and Highland Avenue all fall inside the district. A separate Highland Community Curling Club runs independently of the golf club, according to the club.
Because the course is private, the green space most residents use day to day belongs to the City. Highland Woods park on Highview Avenue East has a play structure, half-court basketball and paved paths, and smaller City parks such as Rosel, Odessa and St. Lawrence sit between the residential streets.
All three. The City's 2016 profile counted 9,055 occupied homes: 45% single-detached, 20% row houses, 23% in apartment buildings of five or more storeys, 7% in smaller apartment buildings, 4% semi-detached and 1% duplexes. Sixty per cent were owner-occupied and 40% rented.
The population barely moved between censuses (21,960 in 1996, 21,030 in 2016), and residents 65 and over grew to 16% of the total. Occupied homes rose only from 8,580 to 9,055 over the same 20 years, so expect resale homes on finished streets rather than new construction. Row housing is a big slice of the stock, so if a townhouse suits you, compare Highland's with townhouses for sale across London.
Five elementary schools sit inside the boundary, four run by the Thames Valley District School Board and one by the London District Catholic School Board; there is no secondary school. Boundaries change, so confirm the designated elementary and high school for an address with each board's locator before you firm up an offer.
Earl Nichols Recreation Centre at 799 Homeview Road is the district's rink, with three ice pads, a hall and meeting rooms, plus a park with a play structure and a mini soccer field. Mitches Park on Upper Queen Street has a full soccer field, three tennis courts and a running track. Basil Grover Park at 555 Wharncliffe Road South has washrooms and a skateboard park the City describes as geared to beginner and intermediate skaters, and Arthur Ford Park on Viscount Road adds two tennis courts.
London Transit buses serve Wharncliffe Road South, Wellington Road and streets through the district; check LTC for routes and times. By car, Wellington Road leads south to Highway 401.
Victoria Hospital and Children's Hospital (800 Commissioners Road East) sit just outside the district's northeast corner, and Parkwood Institute is across Wellington Road at 550 Wellington Road South.
Almost a third of homes are in apartment buildings. For a condo apartment or townhouse, ask for the status certificate early: the Condominium Authority of Ontario says the corporation must provide it within 10 days, with the budget, the reserve fund study statement and the unit's common expenses. If you plan to rent out part of a house, check the City's current rules first.
Wellington Road is a busy corridor, so weigh the traffic for homes that front or back onto it. If you already own in Highland, we can start with a home evaluation. To compare, the district borders White Oaks to the south and Old South to the north.
Something else? Ask Rob or George directly.
It is a member-owned private club, running since 1922, not a public course. Ask the club directly about guest and membership policies.
Not quite. Victoria Hospital's address is 800 Commissioners Road East, which falls in the City's South London planning district at Highland's northeast corner.
Yes. The City lists three tennis courts at Mitches Park on Upper Queen Street and two at Arthur Ford Park on Viscount Road.
Yes. Earl Nichols Recreation Centre at 799 Homeview Road has three ice pads, a hall and meeting rooms.
Call Rob or George directly, or send a message and one of them will get back to you. A home evaluation is free and prepared by a person, never a formula.
