The Coves Environmentally Significant Area sits west of Wharncliffe Road between the Thames and Base Line Road West. According to the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, it is a former oxbow of the river that has become three separate ponds, surrounded by marsh, ravines, woods and meadow, with almost 5 km of managed trails and more than 47 hectares in public ownership. A member of Lt. Gov. John Graves Simcoe's 1793 excursion was the first to write about it; in the 1920s and 1930s ice was cut from the ponds for local ice boxes.
The ESA has more than a dozen access points on residential streets, including Springbank Drive, Cove Road, Elmwood Avenue, Southcrest Drive, Base Line Road West and Emery Street, so trails are close for much of the neighbourhood. UTRCA's brochure notes that after annexation in 1960 a former aggregate pit at Euston Meadow became a landfill, capped in 1972, and the resulting hill is now a viewpoint over the surrounding homes.
More apartments and townhouses than you might expect. In the 2016 census profile, 44% of occupied dwellings were in buildings of five or more storeys, 26% were single-detached houses, 15% were row houses and 10% were in low-rise apartment buildings. About 39% of households owned and 61% rented. The profile also shows an older population, with a median age of 45.1 and 22% of residents 65 or older. If you are downsizing from a larger house, the apartments and townhouses here are a good place to start.
Residential streets include Berkshire Drive, Gardenwood Drive, Southcrest Drive and Chelsea Avenue. Wharncliffe Road South is lined with shops and services, and there is a shopping plaza near Commissioners Road West and Wonderland Road South. If you are comparing a condo townhouse here with one elsewhere, you can see every townhouse for sale in London.
Southcrest Park on Hazelwood Avenue has two ball diamonds and the City's Southcrest Pool, a heated leisure pool with a beach-style entry. Greenway Park at 50 Greenside Avenue, on the river, has soccer fields and an off-leash dog park, and its trails link to the Thames Valley Parkway. Kensal Park on Chelsea Avenue and the Berkshire park and community garden on Berkshire Drive serve the residential blocks.
The Thames Valley District School Board runs Westminster Secondary School (230 Baseline Road West), Kensal Park French Immersion Public School (328 Springbank Drive) and Woodland Heights Public School (474 Springbank Drive). The French Catholic board, Providence, runs École élémentaire catholique Frère André at 400 Base Line Road West. Confirm the assigned school for any address with the TVDSB and LDCSB locators, or with Providence directly, since boundaries change.
London Transit buses serve Wharncliffe Road South, Springbank Drive, Commissioners Road, Base Line Road and Wonderland Road, along with some of the residential streets; check LTC for current routes and times. Wortley Village in Old South is just east across Wharncliffe, and Westmount lies to the southwest.
Ravines and a river add a couple of checks:

The City's Southcrest planning district runs west from Wharncliffe Road South toward Wonderland Road South, and south from the Thames to Commissioners Road West. Our listings use that City boundary.
UTRCA's history lists picnics, fishing, boating, skating, hockey and tobogganing, as well as a federal shooting range, a paint factory and an apple orchard. Today visitors are asked to stay on the marked trails.
