Turn off Jalna Boulevard and the crescents read like a cast list: Renny, Finch, Piers, Nicholas, Alayne, plus Meg Drive and Ernest Avenue. They come from Mazo de la Roche's 16 Jalna novels about the Whiteoak family, a fitting borrowing for a district called White Oaks.
This was Westminster Township land until London's 1961 annexation, and White Oaks became one of the big subdivisions that followed. Most single-family homes went up in the 1970s and 1980s, with townhouses and apartment buildings added later. The mall began as an outdoor plaza in 1962 and was enclosed in 1973.
The City's 2016 profile counted 7,700 occupied homes. Single-detached houses made up 45%, row houses 17%, semi-detached houses 12%, and apartments 26% (16% in buildings of five or more storeys, 10% in smaller ones). Seven in ten homes were owner-occupied.
So a detached house, a semi, a townhouse condo and an apartment condo can all turn up in one search. With most houses dating from the 1970s and 1980s, ask about the roof, windows and furnace, and book a pre-purchase home inspection. For less upkeep, compare condos for sale across London.
Four elementary schools belong to the Thames Valley District School Board and two to the London District Catholic School Board. Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School (TVDSB) is across Wellington Road on Millbank Drive, in the Westminster district. Boundaries change, so confirm the designated school for an address with each board's locator.
Much of it happens at 1119 Jalna Boulevard, one address shared by the South London Community Centre, the Jalna branch of London Public Library and White Oaks Park, which has two regulation ball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts and a splash pad. The indoor South London Community Pool at 585 Bradley Avenue has a water slide and climbing wall, and White Oaks Skateboard Park is at 70 Ponderosa Crescent.
London Transit buses serve White Oaks Mall and streets through the district; check LTC for current routes and times. The mall sits just north of Highway 401, so Wellington Road takes you straight to the interchange.
For a condo, read the status certificate; the Condominium Authority of Ontario says it covers the budget, the reserve fund study and any arrears. If you plan to rent out part of a house, check the City's current rules first.
Check the City's planning applications for the mall site and nearby streets before you buy. If you're still deciding, see how White Oaks compares with the rest of London, or look at the house-heavy streets of Westminster across Wellington Road.
Something else? Ask Rob or George directly.

About 3 km as the crow flies from White Oaks Mall to Victoria Hospital and Children's Hospital at 800 Commissioners Road East.
Yes. White Oaks Mall sits just north of Highway 401, and Wellington Road, the district's eastern edge, takes you straight to the interchange.
Call Rob or George directly, or send a message and one of them will get back to you. A home evaluation is free and prepared by a person, never a formula.
