Its roots predate the factory era. The London Heritage Council's street history, published on the City's open data site, says Hamilton Road was first surveyed in the 1830s, and that White's Bridge, linking London and Westminster townships, was built over the south branch of the Thames in 1833. The London Public Library's plaque at 1184 Hamilton Road marks Siddall House, built by 1820 and described as one of the oldest houses in the area; from 1820 to 1829 it hosted the first Masonic lodge in the London District.
Industry followed in the 1860s. Another library plaque, at All Saints' Anglican Church (249 Hamilton Road), records that London had as many as 52 oil refineries processing Lambton County crude, and that in 1902 Imperial Oil provided the land the church stands on. Street names add more layers: Hale Street is named for William Hale, who came from York (Toronto) in the late 1820s to make bricks for the district courthouse, and St. Julien Street recalls a Belgian village near Ypres.
Detached houses dominate. The City's 2016 profile counted 6,610 occupied homes, 73% of them single-detached, 12% in low-rise apartment buildings, 6% row houses, 6% duplexes and 3% semi-detached, with no buildings of five storeys or more. Seventy-two per cent were owner-occupied. The population eased from 15,970 in 1996 to 14,690 in 2016, so most homes here are resales on established streets. If you own one, we can start with a home evaluation.
Hamilton Road itself is a mixed street of shops and homes. The London Plan names it one of the city's Main Street place types, and the Hamilton Road BIA represents its businesses. Compare it with the Old East Village to the north, Glen Cairn across the river, or with the rest of London.
The district's south edge is the Thames, and the City's trail map shows Thames Valley Parkway segments through South Branch Park, Vauxhall Park, St. Julien Park and Pottersburg Park. The River's Edge disc golf course and St. Julien skate park share a site at 15 St. Julien Street, and Silverwoods Park on Sycamore Street has Silverwoods Arena and an outdoor community pool. Fairmont Park, River East Optimist Park and the south end of Kiwanis Park round out the green space.
Indoors, the Crouch branch of the London Public Library is at 550 Hamilton Road (named for Richard Crouch, the city's chief librarian from 1923), and the City's Hamilton Road Seniors' Community Centre is nearby at 525 Hamilton Road.
Thames Valley District School Board: Ealing Public School (840 Hamilton Road), Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts (795 Trafalgar Street), Trafalgar Public School (919 Trafalgar Street) and Tweedsmuir Public School (349 Tweedsmuir Avenue). London District Catholic School Board: St. Bernadette Catholic School (155 Tweedsmuir Avenue). A school being nearby does not mean an address is in its attendance area, so confirm with each board's locator before you firm up an offer.
London Transit buses run along Hamilton Road; check LTC for routes and times. The Crouch library is about 2.6 km as the crow flies from the VIA Rail station on York Street.

The City's planning district runs from Adelaide Street North east to Veterans Memorial Parkway, between the CN rail line on the north and the south branch of the Thames River on the south.
Yes. The south branch of the Thames forms the district's southern edge, and the Thames Valley Parkway runs through several of its riverside parks. For homes near the water, check the UTRCA regulated area maps, since work near floodplains can need a permit under Ontario Regulation 41/24.
The London Heritage Council's street history says Hamilton Road was first surveyed in the 1830s, and White's Bridge over the south branch of the Thames was built in 1833. Siddall House at 1184 Hamilton Road was built by 1820.
Yes, an outdoor one. Silverwoods Park on Sycamore Street has a community pool beside Silverwoods Arena.
